Why Won't My Forklift Lift?

A forklift that won't lift, lifts slowly or lets the load drift down usually has a hydraulic problem. Here are the most common causes and what a technician checks.

Common causes

  • Low or contaminated hydraulic fluid
  • A leaking hose or fitting
  • Worn seals in the lift cylinder
  • A failing hydraulic pump
  • Electrical faults on electric trucks, such as a bad pump motor or controller

What you can check safely

  • Look for oil under the truck and around the mast
  • Check the hydraulic fluid level with the forks lowered
  • Stop using the truck if it drifts with a load; that's a safety issue
